Multiple Shootings in Downtown Oakland Leave Two Dead and Four Injured
In the early hours of Saturday, a series of shootings in downtown Oakland, California, resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals and left four others injured. The Oakland Police Department is currently investigating the incidents, which occurred within a close proximity of one another.
Timeline of Events
The first shooting was reported around 2:15 a.m. on the 1900 block of Broadway. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a victim who was quickly transported to a local hospital and is presently in critical condition.
Approximately 45 minutes later, officers were called to the 1700 block of San Pablo Avenue following a ShotSpotter alert. They quickly responded to several reports of gunfire in the area. Unfortunately, the victim from this shooting succumbed to their injuries after arriving at the hospital.
At 3:15 a.m., police received additional reports of gunfire near the intersection of 19th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Although officers did not locate a victim at the scene, it was later revealed that another individual had been privately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Shortly thereafter, another victim was found on the 500 block of 18th Street but later died at the hospital.
Around 3:45 a.m., police were alerted to two individuals who had presented at a hospital with gunshot wounds. They reported being shot on the 1900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, and their conditions are currently stable.
Connection Between Incidents
Huy Nguyen, the president of the Oakland Police Officers Association, stated that the shootings appear to be linked to “multiple armed groups” engaged in a shootout. Among the victims was said to be a bystander caught in the crossfire while simply trying to purchase food in the area.
Community Response
Mayor Barbara Lee addressed the incidents, emphasizing the need for community safety and ongoing crime-fighting efforts. “We have to make sure people are safe, feel safe, and continue with our crime-fighting efforts. We don’t sweep our difficulties and challenges under the rug,” she asserted.
